Bathroom Trends: Color Me Happy, No More All White “Hotel” Spa

Sterile-looking ‘hotel’ bathrooms with white subway tile and white marble flooring have been popular in residential design for a very long time. But the page has finally turned and I could not be happier.  Today’s bathroom trends are for warmth and color, spaces you want to live in.

With clients spending so much time at home during the pandemic, they have been asking me to help them create bathrooms that are more unique, colorful and reflective of the personal style they enjoy in the rest of their home.

Here are a few of my recent designs:

En suite in Brookline:

This was the ultimate in personal, designed in honor of my client’s grandfather, who once worked on the railroad. For this, we built the space around this amazing custom mosaic floor inspired by an Art Deco train station. The art work, decorative objects, Bakelite cabinet knobs from Vintage Hardware and sconces from Rejuvenation give such a perfect art deco feel.

Powder room in Cambridge:

The simplest way to add color, pattern and vibe to a half bath is by hanging wallpaper or choosing a spectacular mirror. Here I used a desert flower theme by Newton Paisley. The mirror from Anthropolgie is made of leather fringe and beads for an unexpected composition. For additional texture, I love the wood base on the porcelain sconce by Worley’s Lighting.

Vintage refresh in Brookline:

It’s not always possible or necessary to demo an old bathroom, even one with a pink sink, especially if the tile is in good shape.  I embraced the original color scheme and tied it all together with Hygge & West wallpaper and new brass fixtures, including the taps as well as a new medicine cabinet from Restoration Hardware

Kids bathroom in Brookline:

This space needed to be fun and hardy for three young children. To make it playful, we painted the ceiling the color of sunshine. Of course, a tub was a must-have (and key for resale value). But the graphic tile by Cle Tile gave it the wow factor and also essential practicality to waterproof the space. We added extra storage with a little closet and a vanity and a pop of sunshine with this yellow painted ceiling to go with the yellow birds of the Hygge and West shower curtain.
