The New Nursery: Tales from a Bespoke Nursery in Cambridge, MA

Once upon a time baby rooms were pink or blue or white or had Winnie the Pooh themes. Today, parents are more interested in designing sophisticated spaces that their child can grow into, using furniture that matches the style in other areas of the home.

This nursery, for a client in Cambridge, was created around the wallpaper, Dinosauria by House of Hackney. Its hues of green and purple and blue, combined with classic rather than cartoonish dinosaur images, established a rich palette for the room.

The blue ceiling and baseboard trim operate like a frame around a piece of art. Speaking of art, I commissioned this wonderful custom watercolor alphabet. The artist Molly Grams used prehistoric flora and fauna as well as some archeological tools; I especially love the dinosaur egg with the purple foot poking out. I call that a cue.

The print on the curtains reflect the scales on prehistoric reptiles and the chair was finished in a Perennials outdoor fabric that is soft and durable. Even the piping is a performance fabric by Kravet. The wool rug by Jaipur Living is sophisticated enough to be moved to another room.

I like using natural materials in nurseries, including this book shelf by Serena & Lily, as well as vintage accessories. Of course, make sure they’re lead free or keep it on the top shelf. Lastly, how cute are these handmade canvas pom pom baskets I found on Etsy?
