The Federal Revival

This 1919 Federal Revival home, in the premiere Longwood Historic District, was a stately house last renovated in 1966. With classic lines, stucco exterior and original butler’s pantry, the new owners hired us for a total gut renovation that respected its good bones.

The owners, both lawyers who are working from home more often, wanted every room of their house to be special. They both love color and pattern and so we embraced a maximalist aesthetic.

We opened up the entryway to make it more grand and enlarged the kitchen by removing a rickety back staircase. We chose a sunny yellow for the kitchen cabinets and new herringbone floors to make the space warm and happy.

We also created home offices for each of the homeowners, spaces as luxurious and comfortable as the rest of the house, while also reflecting each of their personalities. No gloomy office digs for this busy couple.

Aptly named a “Revival” home – 104 years on from coming onto the Longwood scene – this home has truly been revived. Its new owners too!

The Longwood Historic District is a neighborhood in Brookline that is known for its large mall of historic beech trees, the oldest grove of its kind in the U.S.
